Co-Founder & Executive Board Chair
David is a serial software entrepreneur with a passion for building mission-driven companies that set out to solve the world’s most important problems. Under David’s leadership, over just a few years Thrive has grown from providing services to a handful of BC clinics and hospitals to helping over 10 million people through healthcare journeys across the continent.
Prior to Thrive, David founded Pulse Energy, which grew into the world's leading energy intelligence software company for businesses and utilities. Before that, he worked as a geophysicist, a professional windsurfing racer, a Paris-based strategy consultant, and Director of Policy to a Canadian cabinet minister. Outside of Thrive, David loves discovering new things with his wife and two teenage daughters. He also serves as a mentor and angel investor with the Creative Destruction Lab, is a board member at Life Sciences BC, is on the Loran Award selection committee, and has served two terms on the Advisory Board for the National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP).
David holds an MBA from École des Ponts Business School in Paris, and a BSc in Geophysics, Physics and Astronomy from UBC and Harvard University. David loves to be on the water or in the mountains (and sometimes both at once). He coaches and competes in flatwater kayak, surf-ski, cross-country skiing, and biathlon.
Chief Strategic Partnerships Officer
Edward directs strategic partnerships and commercial strategy at Thrive Health. He spends his days leading, mentoring, and facilitating relationships between internal commercial teams, and external ones to forge and grow new business partnerships. By carefully evaluating strategic partnership options, Edward ensures that our commercial planning and execution are consistently aligned with Thrive Health’s mission and vision.
Edward brings 30+ years of experience in healthcare operations and innovation to our team. As National Director, Strategic Partnerships at LifeLabs, he worked within Business Development to identify transformative opportunities for laboratory medicine, diagnostic testing, customer and payer channels, and digital technology solutions. Prior to LifeLabs, Edward spent over two decades with Provincial Services Health Authority and the BC Centre for Disease Control, holding various operational leadership positions.
Edwards holds a BSc in Microbiology from The University of British Columbia, and a certificate from the Centre for Creative Leadership’s flagship program focusing on human-centered, transformational leadership producing lasting change. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, walking or hiking with his dog Koby, working on his collector car and in his garden.
Vice President, Finance
Karen oversees the end-to-end financial management at Thrive Health. Her days are spent managing risk and investment strategies while tracking our overall financial health, and that means looking beyond the numbers. Karen uses the raw metrics to interpret our financial performance and develop reporting systems to ensure the consistent delivery of data and insights.
Karen worked in cancer research and radiation biology before switching to accounting, managing her own education and research consulting company for several years. Prior to joining Thrive in our founding year, Karen worked with Simon Fraser University for six years and BC Cancer on a drug discovery project.
Karen holds a post-graduate Diploma in Accounting from the Sauder School of Business, and a BSc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of British Columbia. To unwind, Karen loves to travel, read, and spend time with good friends, food, and wine.
Chief Product Officer
Andrew leads Thrive Health’s product strategy and development, ensuring our platform meets the needs of patients, providers, and health systems in an ever-evolving landscape. With a focus on usability, scalability, and impact, he brings decades of experience in shaping technology that delivers real-world value.
Andrew has held senior executive roles across Canada’s tech ecosystem, including SVP of Products at Crystal Decisions—where he helped scale the company through its $1.3B acquisition—and later at Hootsuite, where he led global technology and product teams. He’s also served as COO of Ecotagious, helping position the company for acquisition, and has spent over two decades advising and mentoring startups and growth-stage technology and software companies.
Andrew holds a B.ScE (Engineering) degree from Queen's University and an MBA from UBC. When he’s not immersed in product strategy, you’ll likely find enjoying mountain life in Whistler, BC.
Vice President, Engineering
Cody drives the Engineering teams at Thrive Health. He manages the software and operational processes, collaborating with team leads on the status of current projects, and providing input into our technical solutions. Working closely with the Product and Customer Solutions teams, Cody ensures that our engineering priorities track towards our OKRs, customer priorities, and the ongoing growth and development of our platform.
Prior to joining Thrive, Cody worked as a system architect for NAV CANADA, designing and implementing safety-critical systems for domestic and commercial use. Before NAV CANADA, he led the engineering function at KAI Innovations, delivering safe and secure EMR systems for physicians in Ontario.
Cody holds a Diploma in Computer Science from Algonquin College of Applied Arts & Technology. When he’s not working, you can find him on the road, discovering new travel destinations (and golf courses) across North America.
Vice President, Corporate Services
Ashley leads People & Culture at Thrive, building teams, designing programs, and leading through change. She collaborates with all department leads to ensure our people practices and programs are firmly established, to drive a culture of excellence that attracts and retains top talent. She also coaches both new and experienced people leaders across Thrive to establish a team ready for growth and opportunity as our company continues to scale.
Ashley brings over a decade of experience in talent planning, leadership development, career progression, and performance management. She has held leadership positions across both for-profit and non-profit organizations within the tech industry.
Ashley holds a CPHR, CEC, and CMP designations, as well as a BA in Psychology from the University of Lethbridge. She completed a Graduate Certificate in Executive Coaching from Royal Roads University, and is a licensed Change Management Practitioner through APMG International. When not working, Ashley can be found hanging out with her chocolate lab or running in the river valley.
Vice President, Business Development
Tyson drives commercial and go-to-market strategy at Thrive Health, partnering with existing and new customers to better understand their business challenges and how Thrive can collaborate with them to solve those challenges. Tyson is a dedicated advocate for the voice of the customer, ensuring their needs are not just heard but addressed with innovative solutions. She embraces the opportunity to work closely with customers, explore their complex problems and actively contribute to bringing solutions to the table.
Tyson brings over 15 years of experience to Thrive in the healthcare, pharmaceutical and financial services industries. With a strong background in business development, Tyson has honed her expertise while holding leadership roles at prominent organizations such as Sun Life Financial, where she served as the AVP of Business Growth and Life Labs as the Director of Consumer Platforms.
Tyson studied biology at McMaster University and completed her MBA at Laurier University. Outside of work, Tyson enjoys spending quality time with her two young sons and their playful puppy. She finds solace in the rhythm of a good run, accompanied by her favorite playlist.
Vice President, Product
Diane leads Thrive’s product development teams, processes, and roadmap. She keeps our product evolution and feature development on track, managing sprint and quarterly planning while consistently incorporating user feedback.
Diane brings 10+ years of experience in B2B SaaS organizations, bridging her unique background in product management, product design, and development. She has previously worked for organizations such as Oracle, EnerNOC, and Payfirma, where she was involved in developing features, product planning, and user experience.
Diane holds an MSc in Human Computer Interaction from the University of British Columbia and a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Toronto. Her key passion outside of work is creating opportunities for youth in sport, coaching high performance athletes and running a club in Olympic Sprint Canoe and Kayak, which competes internationally.
Director, Clinical Solutions & Innovation
Mark drives Thrive Health’s Clinical Solutions and Innovation department, leading the design and development of our clinical care workflows and sparking new business opportunities across North America. He also founded Thrive’s Researcher in Residence program, which brings PhDs and postdoctoral fellows into our work at Thrive to run studies using our platform’s research tooling, and pilot new features with patients and providers.
Mark brings his extensive background in chronic pain management and patient care innovation to Thrive, having previously served as the education lead for Pain BC where he developed chronic pain management programs for healthcare providers. He has also developed non-invasive technologies for anxiety management during his tenure as a managing partner with a start-up, and has worked as a smart technology consultant in research and development.
Mark holds a PhD in Interactive Arts and Technology from Simon Fraser University, a Pain Research accreditation from the European Pain School, and a certificate from Harvard Medical School in Digital Transformation in Healthcare. In addition to his work at Thrive, Mark teaches courses in Sound Design and Body Interface at Simon Fraser University, and produces evidence-based immersive music out of his home recording studio on BC’s beautiful Bowen Island.
Director, Customer Solutions
Emery leads Thrive’s Customer Solutions and Implementations team. Alongside our clients, they work to create detailed plans to implement and deploy complex systems, from initial scope through to roll out and monitoring. Working closely with Customer Success, Emery’s team ensures that our customers enjoy a smooth technical experience to help increase adoption, retention, and expansion.
Emery holds several years of experience in quality assurance and engineering roles with BC SaaS organizations, overseeing user acceptance testing, test readiness reviews, and leading teams to verify product and new feature functionality. They ensure a conscientious focus across the team when it comes to requirements planning, testing a variety of use cases, and documenting all possible scenarios ahead of and through deployment.
Emery holds a BSc in Computer Science and Psychology from the University of Victoria, and is a certified ScrumMaster with Scrum Alliance. When not working, they can be found exploring BC’s forests with their dog.
Richard Layard is a British labour economist who is the founder and current programme director of the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics. He began his career by researching how to reduce unemployment and societal inequality; he served as the Senior Research Officer for the Robbins Committee on Higher Education, which created a report that lead to the expansion of the UK's university education. In the 1970s, he began writing about the economics of happiness and focused on the effects of non-income variables on well-being. His mental health research, including the 2006 Depression Report, lead to the creation of a program in England called Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT), which now provides Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to over 1 million people per year in the UK. Since 2012 he has worked alongside John Helliwell and Jeffrey Sachs to co-edit the World Happiness Report. He collaborated with clinical psychologist David M. Clark in 2014 to publish the book Thrive: The Power of Evidence-Based Psychological Therapies, which explores the importance of increasing the availability of modern talking therapies for mental illness prevention.
Dr. Ed Diener, Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia, the University of Utah, and Senior Scientist for the Gallup Organization is one of the most eminent and highly cited research psychologists in the world. He has over 390 publications and a citation count of over 186,000. Diener was the president of three scientific societies, the editor of three scientific journals, and received major awards in psychology such as the Distinguished Scientific Achievement Awards from the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science, as well as honorary doctorates. He was also an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Diener explored both the individual and societal factors that influence people’s life satisfaction and happiness, including income, upbringing, taxation policies, clean air, and income safety-net programs. He was a leader in the movement to use well-being metrics to help guide public policy.
Ed passed away on April 27th, 2021. His life’s work will live on at Thrive through our well-being offerings and the ENHANCE program.
Dr. Carol Diener received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Illinois, and her law degree from the same institution. She is licensed to practice both law and clinical psychology and has worked in fields of forensic psychology such as delinquency and child custody. Dr. Diener’s diverse clinical experience has included veterans, children, and juvenile delinquents. She was a faculty member at the University of Illinois for over two decades, and retired to devote all of her attention on Nobaproject (the Dieners’ free textbook project) and Enhance, their well-being skills course. Dr. Diener’s research has been cited over 7,000 times.
The Dieners have worked to develop ENHANCE, a 12-week course shown to measurably improve one’s well-being.
John Helliwell is a Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of British Columbia, a Distinguished Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, Co-Director of the CIFAR Programme on Social Interactions, Identity, and Well-Being, and a Board Director of the International Positive Psychology Association. While his early career involved studying national economies within the international system, his time as a Mackenzie King Chair of Canadian Studies at Harvard in the 1990s lead him to collaborate with Robert Putnam and begin researching subjective well-being as a measurement of effective communities and human progress. He co-authored several books on the importance of thriving, including Well-being and Public Policy in 2009 and International Differences in Well-being in 2010, and has also written numerous academic articles on the relationship between well-being and good governance. He currently serves as a co-editor of the World Happiness Report.
Dr. Matthew Bromwich is an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at the University of Ottawa and a researcher within the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute. In addition to publishing 23 papers and four book chapters on Otolaryngology, Dr. Bromwich is the founder and chief medical officer of Clearwater Clinical (acquired by Sivantos in December 2018), which is a company that creates mobile medical devices and offers the product ShoeBOX, an iPad based audiometer for screening or diagnostic testing. He has four patents in Canada and the US for his inventions, with two more pending. In 2016, he was nominated for the E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year award and won the 2016 Interface Health Challenge alongside his team for their work on mobile hearing testing.
Greg Wolfe possesses over 25 years of experience in leading the operations of enterprise technology companies. At SAP’s Business Objects, he served as their executive vice president and general manager of the Americas branches; he played a critical role in expanding the organization into the world’s number one business intelligence provider with over $1 billion in revenue, millions of licensed users, and more than 5,000 employees. In 2009, he founded Emalex, which is a consulting firm for business-to-business technology companies. He has been an advisor for organizations such as Pulse Energy and LightHaus Logic, in addition to holding executive positions at Crystal Decisions, Xerox, Marketo, and Adobe over the years.
James is a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist, the former President of the BC Anaesthesiologists' Society, and is currently the CEO of Eupraxia Pharmaceuticals where he strives to market innovative technologies for some of society’s most prevalent diseases. As the medical voice on the team of co-founders, James brings an invaluable perspective to our product development and long-term vision to improve the delivery of specialist care in Canada.
